Black Onyx is a semi-precious stone that can be mined as a pure black stone, however in most cases it is very popular practice to use a onyx stone, usually a banded grey stone, which is then stained or coated. Our remaining stock of black onyx is the latter, a grey banded stone that has been coated.

The picture does look slightly peculiar due to the highly polished surface of the bead reflecting it's surroundings.
